How many students apply for UGC NET every year?
National Testing Agency conducts the UGC NET exam 2024 twice every year. The UGC NET exam is an eligibility test to become assistant professors in Indian universities and Junior research fellowships (JRF). The UGC NET exam has a huge competition across India with lakhs of candidates applying every year.
The UGC NET 2024 exam has a large applicant pool. Around 8- 12 lakh candidates apply for the UGC NET exam. The number is increasing with each year. However, the number of candidates appearing for the NET exam 2024 is a little less.

For the 2024 UGC NET exam, around 11,21,225 candidates registered for the exam. Out of which, 9,45,918 candidates actually appeared for the exam. Out of the UGC NET qualified candidates, only a small percentage of candidates qualify the exam.
The number of candidates who qualify for the UGC NET exam and become assistant professors are even less in number. Candidates have to meet the UGC NET cut off 2024 in order to qualify the exam. In the end, around 10-15 % of those qualified candidates usually take up roles for JRF and assistant professors.
Some of the main reasons due to which the candidates don't appear for the examination could be due to insufficient preparation, reaching late to the UGC NET 2024 exam centre, or a change of mind.
